Some of landlords in New Zealand are very informative. When we returned the key in the morning our landlord gave us another suggestion by the way. He located the Hokitika Blue Gorge on his map and told us it was free to visit. It was not on our itinerary. As we had some time we took his suggestion and made a short walk through the rock sided Hokitika Blue Gorge.
The map was not so precise. It took us more than half hour to find this place. To our surprise the car park was full. We had to park on the crooky road near the access point. From the car park followed the walking track for a few minutes we were on the first viewing platform. We had views of the gorge and of Kowhitirangi farmland from this lookout.
From the viewing platform we continued walking along the curving boardwalks for a few minutes and reached the swing bridge. rom the bridge we had excellent views of the unbelieveably turquoise waters of the Hokitika River. The river makes its way through the rock sided Hokitika Gorge. It is worth for a visit if you stay at Hokitika.
